Full disclosure up front: I'm not a laser manufacturer or a dealer. I'm the quality and brand compliance manager at a machine-tool company that uses Epilog systems in our certification lab. I review every sample engraving that ships to prospective customers—roughly 200 unique pieces a month. In Q1 2024, I rejected 15% of first-run metal samples because the contrast didn't match the approved reference. This checklist is the result of those rejections.
Whether you're in the Northeast running a Zing 24 NE or in a job shop with an Epilog laser cutter, this applies. We see a lot of Zing 24 units around New England, and metal engraving requests are frequent. The process below is what I walk through when a customer asks for darker engraving on metal.
There are seven steps. Do them in order.
Who This Checklist Is For
Use this when a client wants a dark, readable mark on metal—stainless steel tags, aluminum nameplates, brass plaques, that kind of job. It's not for wood, glass, or stone; those have their own quirks. If you've been engraving wood with a kit and are now trying metal, you'll need to unlearn a few habits.
Step 1: Clean the Metal Surface (Including Rust Removal)
I see a lot of shops skip this. They assume new metal is clean. New metal is covered with rolling oil, storage dust, and sometimes a thin oxide layer. That's enough to turn a dark engraving into a patchy gray mess.
Start by wiping with isopropyl alcohol. If you see rust, you have options. Laser rust removal is a real thing: a low-power, high-frequency pass on a fiber laser can lift light surface oxidation. On our lab setup, it works for flash rust and fingerprints, but don't try it on heavy pitting. Heavy rust needs mechanical abrasion or a chemical remover before you engrave.
Checkpoint: The surface should be dry, oil-free, and dust-free. Run a white-glove test if you're picky.
Step 2: Match the Laser to the Material
Not every Epilog laser creates a dark mark on bare metal. If you have a Fusion Fiber, you can anneal stainless or titanium into dark colors. If you're running a CO2 system like the Zing 24 NE, bare metal will give you a faint mark that mostly wipes off. You'll need a metal marking compound.
This is the first big fork in the road. A lot of bad reviews come from someone using the wrong laser type and blaming the machine. Know what you have before adjusting anything else.
Checkpoint: Can your laser handle bare metal marking? If no, grab a marking compound designed for your base material.
Step 3: Apply Marking Compound Evenly
If you're used to a wood engraving kit, where you load a piece of walnut and hit "print," the compound step feels fiddly. You're essentially painting a thin, even coating over the area you want to mark. A brush works, but you have to avoid puddles. Too much compound leaves a chunky residue; too little gives a washed-out mark.
Let the compound dry completely. This takes a few minutes. Don't rush it.
Checkpoint: You should see a uniform, dry coating with no streaks or bare spots.
Step 4: Set Focus Correctly
Focus is where dark engraving goes to die. On a Zing 24, use the focus tool to set the distance. If the metal piece is slightly warped or curved, you'll see the contrast change across the surface. That's a focus problem, not a power problem.
Check with focus paper if you're unsure. I've seen operators chase darkness for an hour by cranking power, when the only issue was a 0.5mm focus error.
Checkpoint: Engrave a test line across the material. It should be sharp at the edges, not fuzzy.
Step 5: Tune Speed and Power—Don't Just Max Out Power
Here's the counterintuitive part. A lot of operators think "darker" means "more laser energy." On metal with marking compound, that's often wrong. Too much power burns the coating into a gray residue that wipes right off. Too little power leaves a faint hazy mark.
In our runs, the best results came from moderate power plus multiple passes. Two passes at 70% power consistently beat one pass at 100% on stainless and aluminum. But your exact settings depend on your lens, material batch, and humidity. That's why you test.
Checkpoint: Your test engraving should be dark and stable under a dry finger rub. If it smudges, reduce power and try a second pass.
Step 6: Verify the Color Against a Reference
"Dark" is subjective. A production run needs an objective standard. I use a colorimeter when the customer is picky, or a Pantone chip when they're not. According to Pantone color matching guidelines, a Delta E under 2 is considered a match for critical colors. For engraving, I treat anything under 3 as acceptable for production, under 2 for brand logos.
If you don't have a colorimeter, make a physical reference sample and have the customer approve it before you run 500 pieces. That approval protects both of you.
Checkpoint: The engraved color matches your reference within the agreed tolerance.
Step 7: Document Everything and Quote Transparently
This step rarely gets the attention it deserves. Write down the compound type, batch number, cleaning method, focus setting, power, speed, and pass count. Do this for every job. When the same order comes back next month, you won't need to reinvent the process.
And when you quote the job to a customer, list the prep materials and test pieces as line items. I've learned to ask "what's NOT included?" before "what's the price?" A quote that lists all costs up front—even if it looks higher—builds trust. The hidden-fee quote is the one that costs you the relationship later.
Checkpoint: A new operator can pick up your notes and reproduce the same result.
Common Mistakes I See on the Bench
I still kick myself for a $2,200 blunder a few years ago. I knew I should wipe down a batch of aluminum tags, but thought "they're new, what's the worst that can happen?" The engraving came out with dark and light patches. The client rejected the whole batch.
Here are the other four mistakes that show up weekly:
- Ignoring material batch variation. I'm not a metallurgist, so I can't explain why one coil of 304 stainless marks darker than another. But it does. Test a sample from the actual batch you'll use, not last month's leftovers.
- Assuming more power is better. On metal, more power often means less contrast. Use a settings matrix.
- Skipping a final visual check. If operators let the laser run overnight, they ship without inspecting. That's how rejections happen.
- Overpromising durability. Per FTC advertising guidelines, don't claim a finish is 'permanent' unless you have evidence. Say "tested to 100 wipe cycles" or "durable under normal handling."
Last thing: keep a log. The operators who track every job setting get consistent dark engraving. The ones who "just eyeball it" are the same ones calling me for a redo. Don't be that shop.
